SWOT Analysis

A SWOT analysis is used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats of a person, business or project.   This SWOT analysis focuses on my Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats to help me in my own personal growth and help direct me in a career.

Strengths

  • I am willing and able to learn new things and skills.  Whilst studying at University I have learned new skills in Shorthand and technology in the radio studio and editing software.
  • I am a friendly character that is easy to get along with and can communicate well.  In working in groups I feel that I communicate well with my group members and this is reflected in the work that is presented both at University and in part time work outside of University.
  • I am committed to my work and put 100% in to everything I do.  I feel that I achieve good grades and always put in as much time and effort that is needed.
  • I can work both in a group and individually when assigned a task. I feel this is present during part time work as I can communicate and practically work alongside a team of colleagues as well as assigned individual tasks for example tiding the shop floor compared to group tasks with deliveries which require more than person to complete it.
  • I feel confident in using the recording equipment and radio studio at University. An example of this is a live magazine show which was marked and assessed as part of a broadcasting module, which was attained a high mark proving my ability to use the equipment.
  • I am confident in using adobe audition when editing audio, photo-shop when editing pictures and images and Adobe Premiere for moving images and video.   In producing high quality artefacts using this software it highlights my ability to use them. For example of this is when I edited pictures for my A level photography using photoshop.

Weaknesses

  • Although my confidence has grown a lot I still lack confidence in my ability when doing work and worry about making mistakes even though I generally get good grades and passes.  For example the night before handing in course work/assignments I worry about whether what I have written is what has been asked of me.
  • When working in a group I sometimes don’t express my views or opinions as much as I should or would like to.  An example of this is when I was at secondary school studying Performance Technology and even though I was proud of group work that I had assisted with I was disappointed that it wasn’t exactly how I had visualised it as I had been out spoken.
  • If I have lots of pieces of work to do I tend to focus more and put more effort in to the topic I enjoy the most and rush the other pieces if I don’t have as much time as I would like.  For example in my studies if I am faced with a practical assignment and an essay I feel that I put more effort and thought in to the practical work due to enjoying it more.
  • I tend to take what people say personally and to heart and this can have a negative effect on my work.  This is present when a teacher has given constructive criticism I take it as criticism and to heart rather than constructive; instead of using it to improve my work.

Opportunities

  • In doing the professional experience it will help me ultimately decide if working where at the moment I think would be a good career move is the one I want to take and if it is for me.
  • I am able to work in a field that I am interested in and get the opportunity to make contacts.
  • It will enable me to get a ‘realistic’ view of what life is like in the journalism and media industry.
  • Will help me gain more confident in my work and allow me to learn new skills from those who work in the industry.
  • Will open my eyes to new ideas and opportunities after I leave University.
Threats

  • One possible threat is that I am unable to find work placement in an area that I would like to.
  • Another threat would be not being able to get any hands on experience or learn anything and therefore not getting anything out of the placement.
  • Also if I didn’t impress or stand out to the those I worked with I wouldn’t be able to create strong contacts and I would be very disappointed with myself, not getting the most or putting the most in to my work.
