For this research task we set up a Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=160227869330&ref=ts
to get opinions on ‘I hate Big Brother, do You?’.
The participants were asked their name, age, ethnicity, occupation and thoughts on Big Brother.
Below is our research findings:
Group 3B
I hate Big Brother… do you?
Our group choose Big Brother because we thought the feedback from people would be very interesting. We produced a Facebook because we knew it would be an easy way to communicate with others as these days everyone has this social networking. So we added all the people we knew that would put over their opinion on our wall.
Our Facebook group showed us that nearly everyone ‘hated’ Big Brother because they believe ‘It is the worst piece of television ever to be invented.’ Siobhan Hill 18, white, British, student. People dislike Big Brother because they feel that it’s either got boring or it’s become a ‘freak show.’ The most common opinion was that they believe that the show was interesting at the start because it was ‘social experiment’ but now it is became very repetitive. One person said ‘I’ve Watched the earlier series, still end up watching it, but really don’t enjoy it, as the characters are so very annoying.’ Sean Sweeney, White Irish 21. Also loads of people watch it just in case something happens and they never realised that nothing is actually going to happen. Big Brother is a type of show that people NEED to watch it to stay in with the click, if you don’t know what’s going on the show, you may feel left out. Helen said that she has never watched it but she still knew everything that happen in the show through peers and the media. Big Brother is everywhere in the media; newspapers, internet, TV(even the news). It’s something to watch when there’s nothing else to watch because it’s always on. This show gets great rating and great profit, but people still watch it when they say they dislike it. Big Brother is addictive but nothing eventful happens in.
The most common group who liked Big Brother was our socio economic group D and E who are students or young children, and older and more knowledgeable people were the least common. Also we realised that ethnicity wasn’t important in our research because our results didn’t show any differences through race or colour.
If we had more time we would have been able to ask a more varied age range, through passing on our group to more people. There was one problem I felt and that was the title, some people felt scared to present their opinion as there were so many people that dislike Big Brother compared to enjoying it. But overall we think we got good feedback through Facebook.
Our findings were also shown in graphs which gave a clear picture of the demographics who often watch Big Brother.
